Orange Goblin (GBR) - Science, not Fiction

The best way to understand what Orange Goblin aims to achieve with ‘Science, Not Fiction’ is by looking back at their 2018 album, ‘The Wolf Bites Back’. While the two records aren't particularly alike, that ninth album marked a shift towards more focused songcraft and a broader range of styles, although it didn't fully capture the classic Orange Goblin vibe. In exploring their capabilities, they rediscovered some of their older sounds, like their adrenaline-fueled rock and Sabbath-inspired grooves, which had been somewhat absent since 2012. The extended break due to the pandemic seems to have sparked a renewed energy, leading the band to dig deeper into their past for bigger riffs and more insightful lyrics.

‘Science, Not Fiction’ may be their most complete and driven heavy rock album in decades. The lyrics stand out, offering timely wisdom mixed with occasional sarcasm, showing a depth we haven't seen from them in a while. Tracks like “The Fire at the Center of the Earth is Mine” and “(Not) Rocket Science” channel the band’s late 90s sound, while also encouraging listeners navigating tough times. It’s unclear whether the break or newfound sobriety fueled frontman Ben Ward, but the result is an album that’s more focused and outwardly expressive.

A significant change comes with the addition of new bassist Harry Armstrong, who replaces founding member Martyn Millard. Armstrong, known for his work with End of Level Boss and Hangnail, brings a big, loud bass tone that adds depth and variety to the album, particularly noticeable in tracks like “Cemetery Rats”.

Despite being ten albums in, Orange Goblin manages to encapsulate three decades of their sound in about fifty minutes without overstuffing the record. The album explores different styles, from doom in “Cemetery Rats” to punk in “The Fury of a Patient Man,” showcasing their versatility. While the album runs slightly longer than necessary, it still delivers a holistic experience that balances nostalgia with fresh ideas.

Ultimately, ‘Science, Not Fiction’ is a successful return to form for Orange Goblin, blending their classic sound with a renewed sense of purpose. It's a strong addition to their discography, exceeding expectations and earning a high recommendation.
