Red Scalp (POL) - Halluncination

The album kicks off with "In," a brief yet striking solo saxophone piece that sets the tone perfectly. It's swiftly followed by "Hallucination," where Red Scalp dives into a groove that quotes a bit of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" while also channeling the energy of a club track. Riff lovers, don’t despair—this track rocks, and it rocks even harder when the guitars drop in heavier, backing vocals that ooze with sneezing attitude. There’s an impressive amount happening in this song, and every bit of it *works*.

Next up is "Now," another short interlude, this time drenched in synths that feel like a nod to the cosmic soundscapes of UK prog-rave pioneers Ozric Tentacles. Then comes "Paralyzed," an electrifying fusion of rock and rave that layers subtle 60s-style vocal melodies with sampled narration for a truly unique effect. The song feels like a chaotic whirlwind, with synths, guitars, drums, and vocals all battling for attention. And yet, it’s exactly this organized chaos that makes it such a mesmerizing listen.

The final track, "Be Gone," leans more into stoner-rock territory but don't think for a second that Red Scalp does stoner-rock like anyone else. Their version comes with a hefty dose of musical unpredictability and a touch of alien weirdness, proving once again that straightforward doesn’t have to mean conventional.
